Paying forward

Paying forward

This photo was scanned and printed from a Kodachrome 35mm slide that was not seen in more than 50 years, then miraculously found hidden in Grandma's basement last winter. She passed away this month. Woman on the left is our Meema, oldest of 3 who had a scholarship to Juilliard Music but needed to go to work and help support the family so she couldn't attend. Photo was taken in 1954 with her daughter Mara, age 3, our mother, who went on to college as a Voice Major and then sing Opera in Vienna and now enjoys a life in musical theater. This photo is a window to Meema's selfless, giving soul and as we mourn this great loss, a comfort to all those who gained strength, joy and wisdom from every day she was in our lives. In this, I feel the importance of the role of photographer as a visitor from the future able to capture thoughts and send them vividly forward to another generation.
